Omeprazole has been shown to reduce gastric acid production more effectively and to heal duodenal and prepyloric ulcers more rapidly than cimetidine. To determine whether omeprazole might also be superior for ulcers of the body of the stomach, these researchers conducted a double-blind comparative trial in 161 patients with endoscopically proven ulcers at or above the angulus. Patients received 30 mg of omeprazole or 1 g of cimetidine daily for six weeks and underwent clinical assessment, endoscopy with biopsy, and repeat lab evaluations after two, four, and six weeks of treatment.
