Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become the standard of care for many common hospital procedures, including thoracentesis, paracentesis, and central line placement. Emerging data suggest that POCUS might improve outcomes over traditional landmark-based techniques for lumbar punctures (LPs). For this observational study, hospital medicine proceduralists at a single academic medical center received training in an ultrasound-assisted paramedian technique. Among ultrasound-guided techniques, the paramedian approach stands out due to its visualization of the interlaminar space, ability to bypass problematic midline structures, and reliability for diverse patient positions.
