Although congestive heart failure is common, its actual prevalence in the population is unclear. This study provides some concrete data, using the resources of the Rochester Epidemiology Project, which routinely collects data from all physician visits in and near Rochester, Minnesota.
Applying the same diagnostic criteria used in the Framingham Heart Study, investigators identified everyone under age 75 newly diagnosed with CHF during 1981 and everyone under 75 who had ever been diagnosed with CHF as of January 1, 1982.
The annual incidence of CHF per 100,000 person-years was 157 in men and 71 in women. The incidence increased with age, peaking at 1618/100,000 in men aged 65 to 69 and 981/100,000 in women aged 70 to 74. The overall prevalence…
