In 2019, ATS and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) cosponsored a guideline on managing adult community-acquired pneumonia (CAP; NEJM JW Gen Med Dec 1 2019 and Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2019; 200:45). The current update has been published solely by ATS, although IDSA contributed substantially to its development. Key new developments include growing use of point-of-care ultrasound, enhanced availability of rapid molecular tests for a wide range of pathogens (including viruses), evidence supporting shorter antibiotic courses, and new data on steroids for treating patients with severe pneumonia.
