The prevalence of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (IHCP) in the U.S. is between 0.5% and 1.5%, although reportedly higher in some Latino communities. IHCP causes the problematic maternal symptom of pruritus and can result in harmful outcomes for the fetus, including prematurity, fetal distress, and intrauterine fetal death. Labor is commonly induced in women with this condition; however, induction itself poses risks.
