In 2025 the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense updated their guideline for the treatment of asthma in primary care settings, and an easy-to-read synopsis was published in February 2026. The guideline does not address management of severe asthma with biologics, which are best managed by asthma specialists.
This guideline aligns with the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), encouraging the use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) along with a rapid-onset long-acting beta agonist (e.g., formoterol) over albuterol monotherapy for rescue.
