Lichen sclerosus is an underdiagnosed skin condition that can occur in women of all ages, and even before puberty. It frequently causes vulvar itching, burning, pain, and significant vulvar scarring. Until recently, the standard treatment (and maintenance therapy) was testosterone 2% ointment, but 0.05% clobetasol propionate, a potent steroid cream, has been suggested as the new treatment of choice: recent reports have found it to improve symptoms and heal vulvar tissues. This article investigated two forms of maintenance therapy in 32 women with biopsy-proven lichen sclerosus who had been treated with clobetasol cream.
