All dermatologists recognize chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis (CNH), but what about other types of nodules often seen on the helices of the ears of elderly men? Dermatologists in the U.K. studied 25 patients with distinctive nodules on the helices of the ears. The patients all were men, and the median age was 79 years. Wedge biopsy was performed in 8 cases.
Nodules were seen bilaterally in 20 patients. All the patients had either outdoor occupations or hobbies that involved spending much time outside. The nodules had been present for at least one year, were asymptomatic, and never had signs of inflammation. All nodules were at the free margin of the helix.
