Most women ingest much less than the daily amount of calcium recommended to retard the development of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The dairy industry and the manufacturers of various calcium supplements have all claimed that calcium is absorbed better from their product than from others.
In this study, eight healthy young male volunteers were given various calcium salts -- carbonate, acetate, lactate, gluconate, and citrate -- as well as whole milk. The authors detected no differences in calcium absorption from the different supplements or from milk. Previous studies suggest that the results would not have been different in women or in older subjects.
