Because focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign lesion generally found in women of childbearing age, it has been speculated that endogenous estrogen plays a role in its pathogenesis. If so, then women on oral contraceptives (OCs) may be at increased risk for developing FNH, and discontinuation of OCs could result in reduced FNH size, similar to observations in patients with hepatic adenomas. These researchers used serial MRI images (reported to be 100% specific for FNH) over a 9-year period to evaluate 216 consecutive women with 1 or more FNH lesions.
