The FDA has approved the allergy drug Zyrtec (cetirizine HCl) for over-the-counter use in adults and children.
The tablet and chewable tablet formulations may be used to relieve symptoms from hay fever and other respiratory allergies, as well as itching due to hives, in adults and children 6 years or older. A syrup formulation carries the same indications, but, for the relief of hay fever and other respiratory allergies, the approval extends to children 2 years or older. Side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth.
Earlier this month, the FDA approved Zyrtec-D for nonprescription use in adults and children 12 years or older.
