Initial studies of antiretroviral treatment programs in sub-Saharan Africa have been quite promising, with virologic outcomes and adherence rates comparable to those seen in the U.S. (ACC Apr 12 2006 and ACC Sep 1 2006). Whether these programs will succeed in the long term depends partly on patient retention.
To examine retention rates, investigators reviewed 32 reports that detailed the proportion of adult patients retained for ≥6 months in non-research–oriented antiretroviral programs in sub-Saharan Africa. The programs described involved more than 74,000 patients in 13 countries, and most (52%) were implemented by the public sector.
