Rising rates of transmitted HIV-drug resistance led to the recommendation that all HIV-infected patients should undergo genotypic resistance testing prior to treatment initiation. In some areas, the frequency of transmitted resistance seems to have now peaked, at least partly because of improved treatment outcomes (JW AIDS Clin Care May 21 2007).
In the present study, researchers evaluated trends in HIV-drug resistance among newly diagnosed HIV-infected patients in 20 European countries and Israel between 2002 and 2006. Their analysis included 2687 treatment-naive adults who had viral loads >1000 copies/mL and who provided samples for genotypic resistance testing within 6 months after diagnosis.
