Although several recent studies have shown that statins may reduce the incidence and severity of sepsis (see Journal Watch Infectious Diseases Feb 14 2007), the clinical application of these findings has been unclear. Now, researchers have used data from an earlier prospective cohort study to examine the potential benefit of statins in dialysis patients, who are at high risk for sepsis.
The nationwide CHOICE study, initiated to assess treatment options and outcomes for dialysis care, involved 1041 chronic dialysis patients who were enrolled between October 1995 and June 1998.
