Although results of a recent study suggested that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) use during pregnancy did not cause congenital anomalies or neonatal complications (Journal Watch Apr 25 2003), it is unclear whether infants with in utero exposure to SSRIs are at increased risk for later complications. In this study, researchers further explored that possibility.
Of 44 mothers diagnosed with major depressive disorder during pregnancy, 31 took SSRIs during pregnancy (48% took sertraline), and 13 women elected not to take antidepressants. Clinicians who were blinded to treatment group conducted follow-up evaluations when the children born to these women were between 6 months and 40 months of age.
