Both the scientific literature and the lay press have paid increasing attention to the possibility of using androgens to prevent many of the physiologic changes associated with aging. The interest in androgens has been based on well-recognized evidence that endogenous androgen levels decrease with age. Some patients are requesting prescription testosterone. Others are buying dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an adrenal steroid that is available as a “dietary supplement” without a prescription; only a small proportion of DHEA is converted to androgens.
