Results from small, short-term, placebo-controlled studies of black cohosh for menopausal symptoms and at least one large industry-sponsored trial (Journal Watch May 24 2005) have been inconclusive. The evidence for other herbal treatments is even weaker. In this federally funded 1-year, placebo-controlled trial, investigators with no reported conflicts of interest examined the efficacy of three herbal alternatives in 351 women (age range, 45–55; 52% in menopausal transition) who reported at least two vasomotor symptoms per day (mean, 7).
