Some research has shown an association between postmenopausal use of hormone therapy (HT) and subsequent development of ovarian cancer (Journal Watch Nov 2 2006), but most studies to date have lacked statistical power. As part of a large cohort study, British investigators recruited nearly 1 million women (mean age, 57) — none of whom had had cancer or bilateral oophorectomy — between 1996 and 2001. The women responded to an initial questionnaire including questions on HT use, and 64% responded to a second questionnaire about 3 years later; they were classified as current (30%), past (20%), or never-users (50%) of HT (estrogen alone or with progestins) as of their last response.
