Alcohol consumption behaviors are associated with risk for ischemic heart disease (HD): Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with lower risk for ischemic HD (JW Gen Med Jul 4 2006). However, binge drinking (consumption of >50 g alcohol on ≥1 day weekly; 1 standard drink contains 10–12 g of alcohol), has been associated with higher mortality after myocardial infarction (MI; JW Cardiol Feb 23 2006). Using cohort data from two culturally divergent geographical regions — Northern Ireland and France — investigators determined the effects of alcohol consumption patterns on ischemic HD in 10,000 men (age range, 50–59) without ischemic HD at baseline.
