Gonococcal Resistance to Cephalosporins in the U.K.

Changes in prescribing practice in 2010 from cefixime to ceftriaxone plus azithromycin may underlie the decline in prevalence of decreased cefixime susceptibility seen in 2011.

Dramatic changes in drug susceptibilities have been seen with Neisseria gonorrhoeae worldwide (JW Infect Dis Jan 9 2013). Thus, selection of empirical therapy can be difficult, and recommendations can change, depending on surveillance data in a region.

Investigators recently analyzed data for 2007 through 2011 from the Gonococcal Resistance to Antimicrobials Surveillance Programme (GRASP) in England and Wales to provide a more-contemporary profile, which should be helpful in formulating guideline recommendations.
