Recently, the DAD study group reported an increased risk for myocardial infarction (MI) in HIV-infected patients with longer duration of antiretroviral therapy containing protease inhibitors (PIs), particularly lopinavir and indinavir (JW AIDS Clin Care Feb 1 2010). However, due to the limited follow-up period at the time of the previous report, the researchers were unable to assess the effects of atazanavir, a PI currently recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services.
