High doses of iodine, such as those found in contrast agents for computed tomography (CT) or vascular procedures, can affect thyroid function and lead to either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. However, the clinical relevance of iodinated contrast on thyroid function remains unclear. In this prospective Chinese study, researchers identified 200 patients without known thyroid disease who were scheduled for contrast-enhanced CT or vascular procedures. The patients underwent baseline thyroid ultrasound and thyroid function testing before receiving iodinated contrast media.
