The association of hyperglycemia with future coronary events is well known. What is the risk for new-onset diabetes after an acute MI in patients free of diabetes at MI onset? In this retrospective analysis of data from a large trial of dietary supplementation post-MI (Journal Watch Cardiology Sep 16 1999), investigators in Italy obtained data on 8291 MI patients (mean age, 59; 87% men) without diabetes (determined by medication use, physician-reported diagnosis, or baseline fasting glucose ≥7 mmol/L).
