An epidemiologic association between low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and high risk for cardiovascular events has led to a burgeoning of interventions that target HDL. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitors are quite effective in raising HDL levels, although no specific agent developed to date has had any beneficial effect on clinical outcomes (JW Cardiol Nov 5 2007). Investigators now present results of a large, manufacturer-sponsored trial of dalcetrapib, the latest CETP inhibitor to be put to the test. The primary endpoint was a composite of death from coronary disease, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, unstable angina, and resuscitated cardiac arrest.
