Although nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common, few studies characterize its long-term outcomes (JW Gastroenterol Apr 3 2009 and JW Gastroenterol Jan 19 2007). Even less is known regarding the prognosis of patients with NAFLD and advanced fibrosis or how the natural history of NAFLD compares with other common liver diseases, such as chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
To explore these issues, an international collaborative of researchers prospectively studied 247 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and 264 patients with HCV infection.
