Several retrospective studies have suggested that, for various conditions including upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB), weekend admission is associated with worse outcomes than weekday admission (JW Gastroenterol May 29 2009). The reasons for the difference are not well defined.
To further evaluate this “weekend effect,” investigators in Hong Kong used prospectively collected data on patients hospitalized for peptic ulcer–related UGIB between 1993 and 2005. Of 8222 patients in the database, 1573 (19.1%) were admitted on weekends or holidays. The 30-day mortality rate was 4.1% for weekend admissions and 4.0% for weekday admissions.
