Previous studies suggest that statin agents reduce the risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; JW Gastroenterol Jun 10 2011). In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated their antiproliferative, immunomodulatory, proapoptotic, and antiangiogenic properties. To further investigate whether statin use reduces the risk for HCC, researchers conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and observational studies.
Of 2336 studies identified, 10 fulfilled study inclusion criteria — 7 observational studies and 3 studies that reported pooled data from 26 randomized controlled trials.
