Some evidence suggests that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may help treat patients with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia by correcting these patients' apparent abnormalities in phospholipid and fatty-acid metabolism (Journal Watch Psychiatry Oct 24 2002). To assess whether potential confounders (e.g., smoking status and dietary habits) explain these apparent abnormalities, researchers analyzed data (including outpatient diet surveys) from 72 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who were on stable medication regimens; they had been enrolled in a double-blind, randomized trial that compared ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid (E-EPA) with placebo for improving residual symptoms and cognitive impairment.
