Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL), nasal type, is a rare, highly aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is more common in Asia and Latin America than in Western countries. Patients with localized disease in the nasopharynx are treated with combined radiation and chemotherapy, such as the VIPD regimen: etoposide, ifosfamide/mesna, cisplatin, and dexamethasone (JW Oncol Hematol Dec 8 2009).
To assess the activity and safety of a novel combination of agents for advanced ENKTL, investigators conducted a phase II, multicenter, single-arm trial of the SMILE regimen: steroid (dexamethasone), methotrexate, ifosfamide, L-asparaginase, etoposide, and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF).
