In a noncontrolled study in breast cancer survivors, clinical hypnosis lowered hot-flash frequency (JW Womens Health Oct 23 2008). Now, investigators have assessed hypnosis versus a structured-attention intervention for vasomotor symptoms. A total of 187 postmenopausal women (primarily white; mean age, 55; mean symptom duration, 9 years) were randomized to five once-weekly hypnotic induction sessions with a trained therapist or five once-weekly sessions with a trained clinician who discussed symptoms, avoidance of negative suggestions, monitoring, and encouragement.
