Partial (unicompartmental) knee arthroplasty (PKA; see ) is an alternative to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for the occasional patient who has advanced osteoarthritis confined to just one compartment (medial, lateral, or patellofemoral). The largest randomized trial that compared partial and total procedures was conducted in the U.K. and involved 528 patients with isolated medial compartment arthritis. Previously published 5-year outcomes were similar in the two groups; now, the researchers report 10-year outcomes.
During 10 years of follow-up, patients in the PKA and TKA groups did not differ significantly in pain, function, or quality of life.
