Recent guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association advise using the PREVENT calculator to guide treatment decisions in patients with hypertension. These researchers used the PREVENT calculator to classify 10-year cardiovascular risk in 6600 SPRINT trial participants and then assessed the benefits of intensive versus standard systolic blood pressure (BP) targets (<120 mm Hg vs. <140 mm Hg) across different risk levels.
During the study (with median 4-year follow-up), the incidence of adverse cardiovascular events for intensive versus standard targets was as follows:
Low-risk group (<7.5%), 2.0% vs. 2.6%
Intermediate-risk group (7.5%–19.9%), 3.8% vs. 5.3%
High-risk group (≥20%), 8.5% vs. 9.9%
